  • First Look: Rodarte Fall 2011

When Dorothy spun out of the dusty landscape of Kansas, she ended up in Oz. When Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte spin out of the prairie heartlands of America for fall, well, they end up somewhere equally enchanting and magical. They looked at Days of Heaven, and they were drawn to Native American Indian beading, but with a decorative period twist, and they’re feeling long—really long. The latter is important: “A long coat is fascinating to us,” Kate said at the sisters’ temporary workspace the night before their show, waiting for the last few dresses to blow in like a tornado. “The way that the dust would blow up on it as you walk.” It’s the sentiment in that short, simple statement—the idea that a silhouette, a look, becomes part of some inner narrative, romantic and heartfelt—that makes this duo so special. And not to be a tease and all, but given the beauty of what was already there in the studio, that’s not all that’s going to be left in the dust when they show Tuesday at noon.
